Popular food from the world in Kathmandu, Nepal’s most popular food, Daal Bhat is more than just a meal, a combo of lentil soup, rice, and fresh vegetables is the fuel of Himalaya. This treat full of carb can fuel a trekker to walk for weeks through the highest of mountain ranges on earth. What you lack during these treks is variety. The menu is different in the sense that, you leave the vegetarian menu of the Sherpa land for some non-veg menu of the Limbu and Rais, but mostly the food consists of similar items of rice, lentils, and greens. By the time the trekkers are done with their treks, they are already missing delicacies like pizza, burgers,s, and chips.
For some, having Daal Bhat for all these days is not an easy job, so they tend to carry stuff like Tabasco Sauce, Ketchup, Seasoning, meat products like salami, beef jerky, and saucisson. But for some, waiting for the food that awaits when they finish the trek is a different sort of incentive.
Since Nepal has visitors from all around the world, the number of restaurants serving world cuisine in the streets of Kathmandu has only gone up. Name the cuisine or food you want, you will find it in Kathmandu. You love pizzas, you will get it. You love Pad Thai, you will get it. You will even find a juicy piece of steak in this country where they themselves don’t eat it. The food in Kathmandu is sure to fill you up to your satisfaction.
So here are some of the culinary highlights of Kathmandu streets.
Wood-fired Pizzas
Who wouldn’t love some pepperoni, tomatoes, and some mozzarella, after weeks of lentil soup in the Himalayas? The best pizza in town would be from Fire & Ice, a small pizza place in an arcade on Tridevi Marg. They use fresh and authentic ingredients like salami, pepperoni, anchovies, and olives. They have had made mozzarella and even have an option of whole wheat dough.
Next, the best option is Roadhouse Café. On top of their best seller 12-inch pizza, they serve some proper salad, tasty bar snacks, and brownies and ice creams, exactly the foods you would be craving after your time in the Himalayas.
Jambalayas.
New Orleans Café, a courtyard café in the busy streets of Kathmandu serves its customers some gob-smacking delicacies from around the world. From creole jambalaya to barbequed beef and jacket potatoes are some of the foods on their menu. With live music once a week, travelers can enjoy some serene music along with the food they love.
There are plenty of other restaurants serving a global menu, Blueberry Kitchen & coffee shop in Chetrapati is one of the top restaurants among those. They offer the best that every cuisine has to offer, along with some interesting fusion dishes. Their blueberry cheesecake and brownies are to die for. They are among the restaurants with some of the best behaving staffs and great customer service.
MO: MO: little balls of happiness.
These little wraps of meat or vegetable are the lifeline of Nepalese people, even for travelers this is one of the most sought-after foods. These morsels can be steamed or fried or even made spicy depending on your taste buds of yours. There are a lot of Tibetan restaurants that do the best rendition of this precious food, Yangling Tibetan Restaurant is one of the best. The food they serve is prepared by hand to a family recipe passed down through the generations.
Best Sushi in Town.
Located just beside the Japanese Embassy, Lazimpat’s Kotetsu has a reputation to keep as one of the best Japanese restaurants in town. I don’t know how but without any ocean remotely near, they manage to serve some of the freshest seafood to their customers. They serve some of the best, perfectly marbled Kobe beef, don’t even get me started on their sashimi.
Another brilliant restaurant located over on Durbar Marg is Koto Restaurant. With a long history of serving some Japanese favorites, their sushi and nigiri rolls are the best.
Right From the Tandoor
To be honest, there are very few restaurants serving good Indian food compared to other world cuisines. Among those few, Third Eye is one of the finest, might feel a bit expensive but trust me it’s all worth it. You will fall in love with those succulent skewers coming out of the tandoor.
Ghar-e-Kebab, in Hotel de L’Annapurna, serves some of the best north Indian dishes along with some spectacular music twice a week
You Want some Beef?
Hey! Who doesn’t love a big piece of juicy Steak right out of the grill? Well, K-Too serves you exactly that, they have a history of serving the best steaks in town, so you might have some difficulty in getting yourself a seat.
An up and running, Everest steak house is serving some real bangers, grab yourself a big juicy piece of steak and a bottle of beer and you will not regret it.
A taste of Europe.
An Austrian enclave in form of Kaiser café serves some of the best European masterpieces, like sachertorte and schnitzel. Having food amidst statuary, pergolas, and fountains, can’t really complain hey???
For some more European awesomeness head straight down to the busy streets of Thamel, and head into the Upstairs café. You might have to take some stairs to the café, but that entire stairs climbing is well worth it, the food there is homely and delicious. Best European food and a bottle of wine can’t go wrong here.
Straight Outta Thailand.
With Thai Airways bringing fresh lime leaves, lemongrass, and Thai basil every day, you can expect the Thai food to be as fresh as it can be. There are a lot of Thai restaurants in town that claim to be the best but Yin Yang is truly the best there is, serving some authentic Thai dishes, and even better is the ambiance you get to enjoy along with this food.
Nepali, but a bit Gourmet.
What you had in the Himalayas, does not do justice to the Nepalese food. You have to try some gourmet Nepalese food being served in some high-end restaurants in Kathmandu. Featuring south Asian herbs and spices, along with some unique local ingredients like chiura and suki, Nepalese food can really hit you hard. With a decent ambiance, live music, and some spectacular Nepalese food, Maulik Kitchen in sorhakhutte are the best in business. Serving some authentic Nepalese food like Thakali set. The best they serve Is wild boar barbequed in the fire.
Hope this helps you to find that perfect place that satisfies your craving for your food.
